Piet Modrian's The Gray Tree

This is one of Piet Mondrian's earlier paintings.  His usual subject matter was nature or something that pertained to it.  In this composition the subject matter is a tree.  The Tree is abtracted to a great  degree, but is still recognizable to the viewer.  This theme of abtraction was very common during this particular time period for him.  The brushstrokes are precise and somewhat geometric which is contrasting to the curvilinear lines throughout the tree.  This adds to a dynamism within the painting.
